Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics: A Journal of Qualitative Research

Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics: A Journal of Qualitative Research (NIB) provides a forum for exploring current issues in bioethics through the publication and analysis of personal stories, qualitative and mixed-methods research articles, and case studies.

NIB is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of bioethical issues by publishing rich descriptions of complex human experiences written in the words of the person experiencing them.

While NIB upholds appropriate standards for narrative inquiry and qualitative research, it seeks to publish articles that will appeal to a broad readership of healthcare providers and researchers, bioethicists, sociologists, policy makers, and others. Articles may address the experiences of patients and research participants, as well as health care workers and researchers.

NIB is published by the Johns Hopkins University Press on behalf of the Foundation for Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics.

In addition to keeping its readers abreast of unique bioethics issues, Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics can serve as an excellent resource in academic or professional settings. Articles from NIB can become an important part of your curriculum or a valuable tool in shaping your advocacy policies.

“Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics is the most original idea I have seen for a journal in decades. Everyone agrees that respect for persons is a critical component of ethical behavior but somehow most of our journals are focused on the perspectives of academics not the people who experience the difficult bioethical dilemmas. We need to hear from everyone, the nurses’ aides who help people in and out of beds, the people with AIDS who get shunned by their neighbors, the doctors who have to negotiate with patients who want the ‘wrong’ treatments, and everyone else. Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics is giving a voice to everyone who plays a role in healthcare. It is a long overdue innovation.”

–Charles W. Lidz, PhD, Research Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School
